Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to talk about where you can get started if you’re interested in a career in web development or just looking to increase your web skills.
Learning platforms
Let’s start with online learning platforms. We recommend checking out LinkedIn Learning (formerly lynda.com). If you live in Toronto, Canada, you can access their courses for free with your library card. Other online training sites you could take a look at include Coursera, Codeacademy, Frontend Masters and Khan Academy.
Where to start
So you have some platform recommendations, but where should you start? We recommend starting out with courses on HTML and CSS. This will give you a great foundation for understanding how a basic web page is built and styled.
According to TechCrunch, 74% of girls express an interest in a career in STEM fields. Have a budding developer in your home? Consider signing them up for a coding camp this summer. A quick google search should help you find local programs and maker spaces in your area.
Happy coding and happy International Women’s Day!
