Whether you are starting a website redesign or your very first website the first step to a successful project is planning.
Having a well thought out plan will save you lots of time and frustration as you move further along your website process, whether you are going the DIY route or hiring a professional.
Let’s get started
Here are a few quick things you need to start thinking about before you dive in.
1. First up? Get a solid handle on your audience.
Who is your target audience and how can you speak to them? We have a whole other tip on mapping out your customer journey and designing for your target audience that dives into this deeper. What other websites are they visiting? How does your product or service fit into their life?
2. Second, map out the overall goal of your website, and the goal for each page.
Are you a service-based business that needs a services page? Are your services and offerings complex enough that you need individual pages for different aspects of your services?
3. Third, research other websites so that you know what you like, and don’t like.
It can be tempting to see something online and decide that you want it on your website. Always look back to your audience and your goals, and make sure that you are being consistent and true to your brand – and not getting distracted with new trends or ideas that may not serve you, or may muddle your brand.
