It can feel overwhelming when you are choosing a graphic designer for your project. How can you be sure that they understand your business? Are you going to spend thousands of dollars on a professionally designed logo and brand guide that falls flat? Will the brochure they design not resonate with your audience? Will the website not represent your expertise to the right people and in turn not convert?
These are all valid concerns and often lead to people choosing a cheaper option since they feel it is less risky. However, there are some questions you can ask any graphic designers that you are considering, to make sure they truly are a good fit for you. And if you trust that they understand you and your vision, then it is far riskier to go with that quick cheap option where your designs are not connecting with your audience, and the loss of potential revenue is much higher than the initial investment in good design.
My top questions to ask potential designers:
1. Who is your dream client?
You want a designer that works in your niche. If they answer “everyone” it is hard to know if they will truly understand your industry and your unique point of view. You want them to fully understand you and be able to bring your ideas to life.
2. What is your design process?
While their exact process may not mean a lot to you, if they have a well-thought out process and they are able to communicate the steps they will take while working on your project then you can be more confident in their ability to stay organized and communicate with you overall throughout the project. If their process does not make sense to you make sure you ask. You should feel confident that their process will guide the project towards an end product that you absolutely love.
3. Can I see samples of your work?
Most designers should have samples readily available on their website or social media, but if their website seems out of date or you can’t find it, make sure you ask. If their portfolio resonates with you then chances are their design style is a good fit. If you don’t like their portfolio they are not the designer for you.
